Bulgari Leaves Baselworld 2020 ADVERTISEMENT

Bulgari announced today that it will withdraw from Baselworld 2020. It cited two reasons: Global travel uncertainties in light of the coronavirus outbreak and what it said was the successful launch of many of its new products at the LVMH fake watch Week in January.

All four fake watch brands in LVMH's replica watches & Jewelry division (Hublot, TAG Heuer, and Zenith ?in addition to Bulgari) exhibited at the group's fake watch Week, which Bulgari hosted at its Bulgari Resort in Dubai. However, in a sign of a major split within the group over Baselworld, Hublot, TAG Heuer, and Zenith announced that they will remain a part of the event.

In a statement issued by Baselworld shortly after the Bulgari announcement, Stéphane Bianchi, CEO of TAG Heuer and president of the group's fake watch division, said, "The Watchmaking Division remains committed to Baselworld in 2020. We believe in the importance of a major event for the Swiss fake watch industry and look forward to a successful fair, both in terms of image and sales, for our three Maisons."

Bulgari's announcement highlights growing concern in the Swiss fake watch industry about whether Switzerland's two giant fake watch trade fairs ?Baselworld and replica watches & Wonders Geneva (formerly SIHH) ?will be able to be held in light of the growing coronavirus epidemic. The shows are scheduled to be held back-to-back this year, with W&WG running from April 25 to 29, and Baselworld from April 30 to May 5. Last week, in meetings with HODINKEE in Switzerland, fake watch executives openly speculated about whether the shows will indeed be held.

Bulgari's strong performance at the LVMH Dubai fake watch Week in January contributed to the brand's decision to withdraw from Baselworld 2020.

The coronavirus scare was a factor in the Swatch Group's decision to cancel its Time To Move event, originally scheduled for March 4 to 6 in Zurich. It had planned to show new products from its six top luxury brands to both clients and media.

Baselworld managing director Michel Loris-Melikoff addressed the coronavirus issue in Baselworld's press statement today. "With regard to the coronavirus," he said, "we are monitoring the evolution of the situation closely with the authorities. To date, in Europe, all conferences and shows scheduled to be held around the same time frame as Baselworld 2020 are going ahead as planned, with no cancellations currently on record."

Bulgari CEO Jean-Christophe Babin said he was disappointed not to participate in this year's Baselworld and remained open to returning to the show in 2021. The Baselworld press release quoted him as saying he would make a decision in June "once Baselworld's 2021 concept, dates, and costs will be clarified."

Loris-Melikoff, for whom coronavirus is the latest, and perhaps greatest, in a series of hurdles in his efforts to revive the struggling show, noted that the number of exhibitors in all sectors of the 2020 show is up over last year.
